We agree, the best way to enjoy a steak is to BBQ it!
There is just something about cooking on the coals, in the outdoors that makes a plain piece of steak, the tastiest, tenderest and juiciest steak you’ve eaten.
BBQing a steak may look easy, but if you are not careful, you could end up with a charred and chewy piece of rubber instead
Here are 4 steps to help you BBQ the best steak in town
1) Temperature
We are referring to the temperature of your steak, not the temperature of the BBQ. Ideally, your steak should be at room temperature, this way, the proteins are more relaxed, resulting in a more tender final product.
• Defrost any frozen steaks overnight.
• Open vacuum sealed steaks and leave out of the fridge for 30 minutes before cooking.
Giving your steaks time to breathe and adjust to the room temperature, will do wonders for the texture of your steak.
2) Seasoning
You really do not need to overdo the seasoning if you have bought one of our juicy steaks, a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper should do the trick! Try rubbing it with a peeled clove of garlic, delicious!
However, we don’t blame you if you want to get fancy and spice things up. We have various rubs available to purchase or you can mix your own spices to create all the flavours you desire. Popular rubs include chipotle, Texan, and pepper steak.
Remember to rub your steak in some oil before cooking it.
3) Cooking
How do you like your steak done? The recommended doneness for a steak is medium-rare, where the steak has a warm reddish colour in the centre. As with food in general, we all have different tastes, so if this isn’t to your liking, cook your steak as rare or as well-done as you prefer.
Ensure your coals are hot and the grid of the BBQ is sitting at a good height. For a steak that is about 2.5cm thick, you will need to cook it for about three minutes each side – and only flip it once!
4) Resting
One of the most vital yet overlooked parts of the BBQ process is resting the steak after cooking.
Let it rest for 3 – 5 minutes under a piece of foil as this will allow for its juices to settle. Skipping this step will mean the juices will run out when you cut your steak, resulting in a dry piece of cardboard instead!
